ChildLink (240-777-4769) provides information regarding pre-schoolers' needs, e.g., early education, county resources, and immunizations. See their website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/earlychildhoodservices.

CHILD and FAMILY SERVICES: The Child Center and Adult Services agency in Gaithersburg is a private, non-profit mental health agency that provides counseling for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. It accepts Medicaid and private insurance, and has a sliding fee scale for uninsured clients. It has a special program for pregnant women and new mothers at risk of depression. The Aim High! parent guides are targeted to specific communities (including African-American students) within the school system and designed to assist parents in supporting their children’s development of strong academic skills. Call 301-279-3391

EARLY INTERVENTION (240-777-3997) gives assistance if children: REGINALD S. LOURIE CENTER FOR INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN is at 12301 Academy Way, Rockville (301-984-4444). Provides clinical services, counseling, and support for families with children at risk for abuse, educational programs for children 3-8 with problems, early Head Start for low-income families, and other services.

FAMILY HELP:
SAFE KIDS: Parents who need financial assistance with essential safety devices such as car seats or smoke alarms should call SAFE KIDS at 240-777-1462.

The Parent Information and Training Center (PIC) helps parents negotiate with the school system to improve their child’s academic or social situation. Parents call 962-3818 if they believe that their child needs testing and then request it from the school; PIC will assist them. If their child is behind in a class, have them get help - maybe from a tutor by talking to the teacher, counselor, and principal.

Saturday Schools for Youth: If children need extra help in their studies, call the George B. Thomas Learning Academy, 301-320-6545, for locations and schedules.

The Police Activities League (PAL) uses athletics and other activities to deter juvenile crime and violence. The program is for ages 7-18. Call Terry Gloster, 301-840-2694.

The Delta Diamonds in Gaithersburg offer an excellent program for teen girls Thursday evenings. Black-college info and tours, scholarships, career planning, and a full meal. Parents call 301-869-7330.

Montgomery County Police Explorers Club is designed for youth who have a sincere interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement
Open to young men and women between the ages of 14 and 21 who reside in Montgomery County, are in good physical and mental health, and are involved in an education program - high school, college, or a continuing education program

Linkages to Learning provides accessible school and community-based services to at-risk children and their families to improve performance in school, home, and community. Services include health, mental health, social services and educational support.

For CHILDREN with SCHOOL PROBLEMS: to get information on testing, special placement, attention deficit disorder, or other needs, call the Parent Information & Training Center, 301-657-4969.

SCHOOL DIFFICULTIES. The Journey Program in Gathersburg (301-548-4966) may be appropriate for children with behavioral problems, poor attendence, or poor academic achievement.

GATEWAY COLLEGE PROGRAM FOR AT-RISK YOUTHS: Montgomery College offers this program for 16-20 yr. old at-risk youth who have quit or are at risk of quitting school. Students can get high school and college credits, earn a high school diploma while working toward an associate degree/certificate. Luther Rice Neighborhood Center's ESL and after-school programs offer homework assistance, computer lab, sports, and mentoring for students at Forest Knolls, Highland View, Rolling Terrace, and Sligo Creek elementary schools.

Tutoring programs are available at Family Resource Centers: Emory Grove, Washington Square, and Town Center Place.

STUDENTS UPWARD BOUND (SUB): SUB offers monthly workshops, college prep and individual meetings to help students in 10th & 11th grades (ages 15-17) complete applications for college and financial assistance. Must have a GPA of 2.0+. Call 240-948-4029.

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT ACADEMIC READINESS (YEAR): This is a bilingual program for dropouts, runaways, pregnant youth, etc. 301-495-0444/0442/0448.

Maryland Choices will focus on providing new and improved levels of help and assistance to children with serious emotional disturbances. For more information, see the website or call 301-947-0023

CHILD SUPPORT: 800-332-6347. The County’s Child Support Enforcement Office, 51 Monroe St. in Rockville, accepts walk-ins 8am- 4pm weekdays, for those who aren’t using the 800 number. They go to the 9th floor to open a new case; 10th floor for cases that are open.

The YMCAs have programs for youth. Parents call Montgomery College (MC) and the Public Schools have a partnership to help high school dropouts or students at risk: Gateway to College, for students to earn credit at MC. Get info at high schools.

SISTERS PROGRAM: Self Image Strength Tenacity Empathy Responsibility Success (SISTERS) is an after school outreach, education, empowering, recreation, peer mentoring, book club. and career I and R program for pre-adolescent and adolescent girls (middle/high school age). For consultation, screening, and other services, call 301-718-2467. Refer families to the Youth Services programs in the county if any family member needs counseling.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT: Participants should talk to the teachers during the school year, go to Back-to-School Nights, oversee homework, help with a school play, book drive, science fair, career day, field trips and picnics. Parents call 1800-281-1313 or see www.schoolsuccessinfo.org.

Who Benefits From ACT?
.. Montgomery County residents who are 18 years or older who have a severe & persistent mental illness causing symptoms and impairments which produce distress and major disabilities in adult functioning (i.e. employment, self-care, and social and interpersonal relationships).
.. ACT clients are adults with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders or those who experience significant disability from other mental illnesses.
.. People who have difficulty getting to appointments on their own as in the traditional model of case management, or who have not successfully been able to access the mental health system, or who have limited understanding of their need for help.
Primary Goals of ACT:
.. To lessen or eliminate the debilitating symptoms of mental illness each client experiences and to minimize or prevent acute episodes of the illness through support & education.
.. To enhance the quality of life.
.. To enhance an individual’s ability to live independently in his or her community.
.. To improve functioning in adult social role or employment role.
.. To lessen the family’s or significant other’s burden of providing care by providing support, education, and skill teaching.

Change in DHHS Clinic Access Referral: The County's Child and Adolescent Mental Health Clinics now operate within Behavioral Health and Crisis Services. The "Access Team" serves as the primary entry point for all referrals. Reach the Team at 240-777-1770.

FREE COUNSELING: Therapists in private practice donate time to low-income clients. Visit www.probonocounseling.org, or call 1-877- 323-5800 or 301-805-8191.

NIH/NIMH has a mood/anxiety disorders program. They offer transportation and child care for participants who receive mental health treatment. Both English and Spanish speakers, call the general CORE intake line, 301-496-5645.

COUNSELING / MENTORING. The Institute for Family Centered Services in Gathersburg offers behavioral interventions and counseling for family members. Call 301-721-9324.

PHONE REASSURANCE: Caregivers of seniors, children or grandchildren with developmental disabilities who need counseling by phone can be referred to 240-777-2611. Referral forms can be faxed to 240-777-2601.

Other sources of Counseling:
