Health and Human Services for Families and Children

There is an information and referral line for the County Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The phone, 240-777-1245 (240-777-1295 TTY), will be staffed by information and referral specialists Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The line offers assistance in multiple languages including Spanish, Chinese and Hindi. Calls received after hours will be referred to the 24-hour Crisis Center.

A variety of supportive, preventive, protective, rehabilitative services are provided to children and their families to help children be safe and healthy within their own family. If protection is not possible in the child's own home, temporary placement in foster care, or permanent placement with relatives or an adoptive family may be arranged. This is the single point of entry for all of Child Welfare Services. Programs including:

Regional Health Services

The Regional Health Center for the B/CC and Potomac region is the Rockville/Piccard Drive Center. It is located at 1335 Piccard Drive, Rockville. This office determines eligibility for federal, state, and local programs, such as Medicaid. One may qualify for services by applying through the Service Eligibility Unit (SEU). The main number is 240-777-3120.

The center provides an array of services, including prenatal and postpartum care, immunizations, pregnancy tests, health education and counseling, case management and dental services. These services are provided on a sliding fee scale and are provided regardless of one's ability to pay.

Care for Kids is a county-wide program which provides health care services to low income, uninsured children from birth to 18 years of age. Services include well and sick care, immunizations, routine laboratory tests, pharmacy benefits, dental care, mental health care, and case management. Hospitalization and emergency rooms visits are not covered under this program. Eligibility is based on income and family size and is determined by the SEU. It is the policy of Montgomery County to ensure that every child has adequate health care. To apply, please call 240-777-3120.

Dental Services are provided for children in Head Start and Care for Kid, and to enrolled maternity patients. Limited emergency dental services are available to income-eligible adults, with additional preventive and educational services for seniors. Please call 240-777-1875.

Family Planning Program, a countywide program providing reproductive health care and GYN consultation services to low income women. Teen access to services is through a walk-in eligibility process. Please call 240-777-3120.

Immunizations are available at several locations for eligible children. Flu shots are available in season for adults. To inquire about locations, please call 240-777-1050.

Maternity Program (countywide) providing for pre/post natal care to low income women who do not have insurance for these services. Delivery and high risk obstetric care is arranged through two area hospitals. 240-777-3120

Projecto Salud provides countywide, family centered primary care services to the Latino population. Services include physicals, management for chronic diseases, sports and school physicals, EKG's and laboratory work. Provides referrals to other agencies. 240-777-1621

Women's Cancer Control Program provides breast and cervical screening to eligible women through vouchers for free mammograms, clinical breast exams, and Pap test for cervical cancer. TO be eligible, women must be at least 40 years old, with limited income and no health insurance coverage for these screenings. Case management is also available. 240-777-1750, Spanish-240-777-4549

Private Partners

Mobile Medical Care,Inc. provides primary medical care to the medically indigent and uninsured of Montgomery County. Fee is based on income, and the patient is responsible for lab fees. Referrals are not required but the patient must call for an appointment. This is not a walk-in service and is not a clinic for free service. Please call 301-493-2400.

Services: Provides benefits to eligible residents in the form of Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA), Food stamps, Medical Assistance, and Transitional Emergency Medical and Housing Assistance (TEMHA).

Food Stamp Program- Provides benefits monthly to eligible households to purchase food.

Medical Assistance Program- Provides health benefits for low-income people.

Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA)- A federal/state program for eligible children and their parents or other caretakers. TCA provides limited cash assistance. Parents are required to be working toward employment and self-sufficiency in order to receive benefits.

Transitional Emergency Medical and Housing Assistance (TEMHA) Program- A state program to help Maryland residents who are totally disabled and cannot work.
