Waiting List FAQ

Is the waiting list open?

The HOC waiting lists for both the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) and Public Housing programs are currently closed. While the lists are closed, HOC does not accept new applications.

Where can I get an application?

Applications are not available while the waiting lists are closed. Once the waiting lists open, applications are available at Montgomery County Government Service Centers, Montgomery County Public Libraries, the HOC website (http://www.hocmc.org) and all HOC offices.

When will the waiting lists open?

There is no date set for the next opening of either waiting list. The Commission will open the waiting lists when we have served more of the people already on our waiting lists OR when HOC finds that the data on the old waiting lists no longer provides accurate contact information for those on the lists.

How can I find out about the next opening?

HOC advertises waiting list openings in the Gazette, the Washington Examiner and the Washington Post.

HOC also suggests that you check the HOC website once a month. HOC also posts notices on our Facebook page. Once you are on the Facebook site, search for "Housing Opportunities Commission." If you don't have regular internet access, you can call HOC at (240) 773-9000 for updates.

If I'm already on the waiting list, will I need to re-apply when it opens again?

Yes. When HOC opens the waiting lists, HOC erases the previous waiting lists and anyone who wishes to remain on the waiting lists must re-apply.

What number am I on the waiting list(s)?

There are no positions on the waiting list(s).  Selection is by computer-generated lottery.  Drawings are held throughout the year as vouchers become available.

How are people selected from the waiting list(s)?

Applicants are selected by computer-generated lottery.  Applicants who live, work or have notice of work in Montgomery County are given priority for selection.

My contact information has changed.  What do I need to do keep my information current with HOC?

If you move after you have been accepted to the waiting list, it is important that you notify HOC so that we are able to contact you if you are selected.  To update your contact information, write a letter that includes your old information, your new information, the effective date of the change and sign and date your letter.  Requests should be mailed to:  Housing Opportunities Commission, Attn: Waiting List, 10400 Detrick Avenue, Kensington, MD 20895.
